New Radio Type Approval Procedure in Sri Lanka
On 16 December 2020, a new radio type approval procedure is coming into force in Sri Lanka.
Recently, the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) of Sri Lanka published “Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment (RTTE) Type Approval Rules 2020” in the official Gazette. They are applicable to all types of RTTE intended to be imported, marketed, manufactured or used in Sri Lanka.
According to the regulation, there will be two main type approval procedures:
- Standard Type Approval (whereby a sample device and a Technical Construction File must be submitted)
- Simplified Type Approval (applicable for RTTE that appears on the Commission’s Type Approval Register which was approved by the Commission at the time of application is made; the applicants should ensure that the RTTE applied for is identical to the RTTE that is already type approved and appears on the Type Approval Register)
The new regulation also contains labeling requirements. They consist in affixing a label and a specified Type Approval number on the Type Approved RTTE. Printed labels shall be obtained from the Commission after payment of the prescribed fee.
The Type Approval certificate shall be valid for a period of four (4) years as long as the type approved RTTE (supplied to the market) maintains the same technical specifications including the operating frequency.
There are also some exemptions from the regulation. For example, for RTTE installed in a vehicle as a part of it such as car navigation units or remote car keys that use short range technologies such as WiFi, Bluetooth, etc.
