Regulation changes regarding emissions type-approval
Recently the European Commission published a Draft Commission Regulation, which brings changes to emissions type-approval of heavy-duty vehicles.
This draft Commission Regulation has been drafted in the process of amending Regulation (EU) No. 582/2011. Previously, type approval testing had to be repeated for both diesel (B7) and pure biodiesel (B100) to demonstrate compliance with emission requirements. To minimize this duplication and facilitate certification for the use of pure biodiesel and biodiesel blends (such as FAME B20/B30), specifications for pure biodiesel as a reference fuel based on the relevant international and European standards need to be introduced.
The draft Commission Regulations main amendments are that the testing of the parent engine of heavy-duty vehicles (M1, M2, N1) solely on pure biodiesel is in compliance with emission testing requirements. These changes will be found in Annexes I and IX in the Regulation (EU) 582/2011.
Meaning that testing the parent engine with pure biodiesel is in additional option to testing. The old testing system for example with diesel (B7) will still also be in compliance with emission requirements. This Regulation shall enter into force on the third day following its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.
