New EMC Directive?

The European Commission is considering modifications to the Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive

On the 23rd of January 2020, the European Commission launched a public evaluation process of the Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive 2014/30/EU (EMC Directive).  For 4 weeks, it will be collecting feedback about the Evaluation and Fitness Check Roadmap for the EMC Directive, which will later lead to a public consultation of the act (probably in the first quarter of 2020).

The aim of the EMC Directive is to limit electromagnetic emissions from electric devices such as TV sets, mobile phones, radios and nearby washing machines or electrical power lines which tend to influence each other and cause interference.  The Directive covers both apparatus (without limitation of voltage or frequency) and fixed installations, laying down essential requirements that apparatus must comply with in order to be placed on the market as well as the applicable conformity assessment procedure.

Since there have been no major modifications of the Directive (or its predecessors) for almost 30 years, the European Commission decided to check if it is still fit for purpose in terms of effectiveness, efficiency, relevance, coherence and EU added value.  The assessment will also focus the issue of the interaction of the EMC Directive with other EU legislations, such as the Low Voltage Directive (LVD) 2014/35/EU, the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) 2014/53/EU or the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.
