European Cybersecurity Act 2019

European Cybersecurity Act (CSA) will reinforce the European Union Agency for Network and Information Security (ENISA) and create a European cybersecurity certification framework

The European Cybersecurity Act (Regulation EU 2019/881) entered into force on the 27th of June 2019 and its two main objectives are to establish a new mandate of ENISA, the EU Agency for Cybersecurity, and create a European cybersecurity certification framework for ICT products, services and processes.

Through the Act, businesses will be able to receive voluntary, unless specified otherwise, certification for their ICT products in order to ensure higher standards for European customers.
Additionally, the CSA lays down three levels of security assurance: basic, substantial and high.
The basic level enables manufacturers or service providers to achieve conformity through self-certification, whereas the substantial and high levels require assessment through national cybersecurity certification authorities.

How does the CSA affect the automotive industry? A cyber-attack on a computer or mobile phone is, for the victim, annoying at best but usually not life-threatening. Cyber-attacks on cars however, can arguably be extremely dangerous to life and limb due to critical safety vehicle components and driving functions, like ESC or braking assistants, being integrated into the vehicle’s internal data communication system.
Therefore, with the European Cybersecurity Act, the foundation is being laid for not only consumer protection, but most importantly, for further advancement in cyber security research and development.
