Vehicle type approval in UK after Brexit
Finally, there is a little more clarity on the vehicle type approval provisions in UK after Brexit
The British Department of Transport issued guidelines on the GB vehicle type approvals and the acceptance of EU vehicle type approval and UNECE regulations in the United Kingdom after the Brexit.
From 1 January 2021, existing EU type approvals issued by EU-27 Type Approval Authorities (i.e. excluding UK issued ‘e11’ type approvals) will no longer be automatically accepted in GB for the purpose of registering vehicles for use on the road, other than for vehicles already in the UK on 31 December 2020. From 1 January 2021, the VCA (Vehicle Certification Agency) will issue provisional GB type approvals to manufacturers holding valid EU type approvals.
Components may continue to be placed on the market with existing valid EU approvals until 1 January 2022.
It is expected that in the first half of 2021, a comprehensive GB type approval scheme will replace the provisional GB type approval scheme. The legislation setting out the full details is expected to cover, among others:
- GB approval number marked on the vehicle/product
- GB Certificate of Conformity supplied with all vehicles
- Manufacturer’s representative based in UK
- VCA Conformity of Production checks.
