Indian BIS certification for safety glass postponed
A couple of month ago we informed about the planned BIS certification for vehicle safety glass in India (see our insight), which was supposed to come into force in September 2020. However, according to the recent information, it will be postponed.
On 23 June 2020, the Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry published the order F. No. 11(6)/2017-CI which postponed the entry into force of the BIS certification for vehicle safety glass until 1 April 2021.
Basically, it is good news for all OEMs and safety glass manufacturer since the previous deadline was very tight. On the other hand, the practise of announcing new product regulations and then postponing them is quite common among authorities worldwide (not only in India) but it creates unnecessary confusion and additional costs for organizations.
Anyway, when the requirements come into force in April 2021, safety glass will have to be certified according to the Indian standard IS: 2553 (Part 2): 2019 and bear the Standard Mark under a licence from the Bureau as per the Scheme-I of Schedule-II of the Bureau of Indian Standard (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.
Glass may not be the last automotive product subject to the BIS certification. A similar draft regulation for wheel rims has been published. Moreover, rumours are circulating on the market that BIS might be extended also to other automotive products.
